Pilates for Physical Therapy?

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Pilates... just a fitness class?

If you have any interest in health and fitness chances are you've heard of Pilates. Maybe you have passed a class once full of people working out on crazy looking contraptions. Did you know though, that Pilates is so much more than just a fitness class. Physical Therapists are using Pilates more and more to help in patient rehabilitation. Its being used to treat many different conditions and diagnoses like:

  • Arthritis

  • Back and Neck Pain

  • Scoliosis

  • Sprains and Tendon Injuries

  • IT Band syndrome

  • ... and MANY more!

What benefits can Pilates offer for a Physical Therapy patient?

In the interest of keeping it brief we will name off a few of the most notable benefits here, but choosing Pilates as part of your rehabilitation will offer so much more.

  • Improves Posture- Strong abdominal and back muscles make it possible for you to use good posture while sitting or standing. Better posture not only boosts your confidence, but can help prevent back problems.

  • Strengthens Muscles- Pilates focuses on improving strength in your core and throughout your body. Increased strength can help you avoid injuries during exercise or even just everyday activities.

  • Reduced Pain- (who couldn't use that!) A strong core and improved posture can help relieve all sorts of pain in your back, shoulders, neck and hips.

  • Better Coordination- Pilates movements are controlled and coordinated, helping your body stay in alignment and improving your awareness of your body. Over time, these exercises can help you enjoy better coordination in your everyday life.
